Weavers from Aussa

Morcrafts offered Rachna Goradia, a student of the National Institute for Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, India, a special grant to work with the skilled weaving community in Aussa, a small village in Sholapur whose population is less than 25,000.

Employed by the Marathwada Khadi Gram Udyog Samiti, the weavers have traditionally produce towels and bedspreads. With Rachna's design inputs, they were encouraged to use different materials such as bamboos, fish line, blades of wheat and create new product lines that included lamps, screens, door mats and blinds. The resulting creations were displayed for sale at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, and were much appreciated by urban shoppers.
